Noth, Martin

Noth, Martin
(1902–68)
   Theologian and Biblical Scholar.
Noth was born in Dresden, Germany, and he was educated at the Universities of Erlangen, Rostock and Leipzig. He subsequently taught at Königsberg, Bonn and Jerusalem. He is remembered for his radical theses on the origin and organisation of the early Israelite tribes, which he expounded in his Geschichte Israels and his Die Welt des Alten Testaments. In addition, he argued that the Book of Deuteronomy must be seen as a preamble to the ‘Deuteronomic histories’ (the Books of Joshua, Judges, Samuel and Kings) rather than as a conclusion to the Pentateuch. He was also the author of several biblical commentaries. His ideas have been highly influential and have transformed the pattern of Old Testament Scholarship.
Martin Noth, The Laws in the Pentateuch, edited by H.W. Wolff and with a memoir by R. Smend (1966).
